Redesigning a small culture journal as a slower, more generous reading object across print and screen.

A slower object

Margin is a quarterly about culture, work and the spaces in between. The editors wanted the redesign to feel like something you would keep, so we rebuilt the grid around long reads and generous margins rather than density.

The masthead is set in a high-contrast serif and the body in a workhorse text face. Each issue carries a single accent colour chosen by the editors, which is the only variable in the system.

Outcome

The relaunch issue sold out its first print run. The same grid now drives the web edition, with the reading column and rhythm preserved on screen.
